Trip to Europe 2011
04-Oct-11
York, origination of the Kit Kat bar, Yorkie, and probably the York peppermint patty… It was laundry time, walked it down to drop it off, the Brentwood guest house we are having are stay at offered to pick it up the next day while we tour, nice not to worry bout.
“you ok” is something new i learned here, meaning “how are you”… I was worried i looked like i was gonna pass out or something.
Due to the time getting in, had to rush into the center of the old town to get to betty’s to have an English Tea. Luckily there was no line, just one couple ahead that decided they would rather go talk on the cell phone so they left. I didn’t have milk in my tea, but the tea on its own seems to have a buttery flavor. Sitting and watching the lives walk by out the fish tank like area and stuffing in a few crustless triangle sandwiches was nice, as i also pumped in the caffeine. A little chocolate desert, but too bad those raisons and dry’d hard currants were in the scones. Well, maybe the scones were too much anyways.
After a stop to pour out, we went directly to the big cathedral/minster/abbey (what ever they are called) before the close. A tour of the underbelly showed remains of part of the old roman temple that was once there, and parts of a norman church, with the “newest” built on it’s foundations. The church is so big and heavy that they had to shore it up with cement underneath because it was shifting enough from the weight that it was all starting to crack and probably would have fallen if the work was not done. The mold level was at a hazardous breathable level, but the sounds piping out from the organ above made the experience better. In the main church level a service was beginning, listened to the choir and organ for a bit before heading out for a walk around the old parts of town. Went for dinner at a place called the Blue Bicycle, the food, which is above old english fare, was not as good as the price would call for. The plate was so hot, my sea bass just kept cooking til it was overcooked, and the seasoning was to separated between the items. The dish just didn’t come together, they could be chopped.
The weather was very cool and wind blowing, so made an early evening.
